Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman on Monday attended a videoconference presenting the Declaration against Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations. The conference was held at the initiative of Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau and saw the participation of foreign ministers from all over the world, including the EU. The Declaration calls on the governments to adopt an even-handed approach to foreign nationals, advance international cooperation and put an end to the practice of arbitrary arrests, detentions and sentencing.
Addressing the event, Grlić Radman underscored that the arbitrary arrests and detentions of foreign nationals were contrary to international law, undermined international relations and had a negative impact on foreign nationals traveling, working and living abroad.
“We firmly believe that it is our duty, together with our Canadian friends and allies, as well as partners from the EU and other countries sharing the same values, to be the guardians of the pillars of international law and the principles of the UN Charter”, underlined the minister.
