REGISTERING A CHILD IN CROATIA

In order to register a child (minor under 18) in the Croatian Births and Nationals Registry an application has to be submitted by a legal representative provided that at the time of the child’s birth, one of the parents had Croatian citizenship.
Application can be submitted:

• 1. Directly at the Registry Office in the Republic of Croatia according to the place of residence/registered address in Croatia, if a parent who is Croatian national, has registered Croatian address in the Croatian passport or ID, or
• At the Registry Office Centar in Zagreb, if a parent who is Croatian national, has no registered address in Croatia

If the parent(s) is/are not in a position to travel to Croatia, a parent who is Croatian national may assign power of attorney to a relative/friend who can lodge the application on their behalf in Croatia at the one of the above-mentioned Registry Offices in Croatia.

• 2. Through the Croatian Embassy in London by appointment only (request an appointment through https://konzularniportal.mvep.hr/?lang=en ).

Applicant must submit the following:

• The application form (available at the Embassy when applying)
• A valid Croatian passport of a parent who is a Croatian citizen
• Identity document  of a legal representative who is submitting the application
• A valid passport of the other parent
• An original birth certificate - a UK Certified Copy of an Entry of a Birth must be legalized by the Legalization Office with an Apostille stamp- paper version  (https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised) and translated into Croatian by an official interpreter in the UK (a list of Croatian interpreters in the UK is available in the Consular Section of this web site) or by a certified court interpreter in Croatia. For information on requirements on legalization of documents issued by another country parent must inform themselves at the official institutions of the country who issued the birth certificate on their use abroad.

If a child was born in the marriage, parent - Croatian national has to register the marriage in Croatian Marriage Registry (please check instructions on https://mvep.gov.hr/consular-information-107317/marriage-180039/180039 ) prior to making an application for registering a child. If a child was born outside of marriage, mother and father have to make a written statement at the Embassy recognizing their parental rights and obligation before making the application.
INFORMATION FOR YOUNG ADULTS 18-21
In order to register a young adult for age of 18 until 21 years old in the Croatian Births and Nationals Registry, an application has to be submitted by a young adult in person by appointment only (request an appointment through https://konzularniportal.mvep.hr/?lang=en ) provided that at the time of their birth, one of the parents had a Croatian citizenship and have had their marriage registered or, if unmarried, gave a parental rights and obligation statement to the Embassy. For young adults who wish to be registered in Croatian Birth and Nationals Registry same requirements apply as indicated above for minors apart from personal submission of the application.
THE EMBASSY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REQUEST ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS WHILE CONDUCTING LEGALLY BINDING PROCEEDINGS RELATED TO EACH REQUEST SUBMITTED.
PROCESSING TIME:
The average duration of proceedings from when the application is submitted through the Embassy is 3-6 months. The same procedure in the Registrar's Office in Croatia can be made the same day.
