"CROATIA - CRADLE OF EUROPEAN CULTURE" EXHIBITION OPENS IN VIENNA
VIENNA, March 18 (Hina) - An exhibition of Croatian art from the period between the years 800 and 1300 was opened at the Dommuseum of Vienna's St. Stephen's Church on Thursday evening, with many Austrian and Croatian secular and religious dignitaries attending.
The exhibition features 50 works of applied arts, sculpture and painting on wood and parchment.
Opening the event, the secretary-general of the Austrian Bishops' Conference, Agidius J. Zsifkovics, wished Croatia to join the European Union as soon as possible, saying Croatia was an unavoidable part of the European family, as proved by this exhibition.
This is one of many exhibitions about the rich cultural cooperation between Croatia and Austria, said Croatian Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic.
"The exhibition clearly demonstrates that Croatia belongs to Europe as it reflects European culture on Croatian territory as well as Croatia's contribution to European culture," Biskupic said, adding that at a time when Croatia was on the doorstep of European Union membership, the exhibition would contribute to the further strengthening of Croatian-Austrian friendship as well as to bilateral relations, notably in culture.
Austrian Culture Minister Claudia Schmied said the exhibition was a jewel in the cooperation between the two friendly countries as well as a significant contribution by Croatia to the European cultural heritage.
The director of the Dommuseum, Bernhard Boehler, said they were honoured to show the valuable exhibition in this form outside of Croatia for the first time.
The exhibition closes on June 12 and was co-organised by Dommuseum and the Klovicevi Dvori gallery in Zagreb.
