24 April - Israel"s Holocaust Martyrs" and Heroes" Remembrance Day
On 23 April 2017 in Jerusalem, the state opening ceremony of the Holocaust Martyrs" and Heroes" Remembrance Day took place in the presence of the Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and Supreme Court Deputy President Elyakim Rubinstein, organised by the Yad Yashem - The World Holocaust Remembrance Centre. The central theme of this year’s Remembrance Day at the Yad Vashem is: “Restoring their Identities: the Fate of the Individual during the Holocaust”. The audience was addressed by the Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ester Miron, a representative of the Holocaust survivors, while other six survivors lit torches in memory of the six million Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust. Ms Tina Krce, chargée d"affaires a.i. at the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Israel, attended the ceremony. All diplomatic corps in Israel was invited.
Day earlier, on 22 April 2017 in Tel Aviv, Yair Lapid, Knesset Member and the Chairman of the Yesh Atid party, organised and hosted at his home an event commemorating the Holocaust Martyrs" and Heroes" Remembrance Day, so-called Zikaron BaSalon, for the ambassadors in Israel. Zikaron BaSalon is a traditional event, usually of a very personal character, when the Holocaust survivors’ families gather in their homes remembering their family members perished in the Holocaust. Knesset Member Lapid shared with the diplomats gathered a story of his father Tomislav Lampel (later known as Yosef Tommy Lapid, Israeli politician, justice minister and prime minister"s Sharon deputy), born in Novi Sad, whose family perished in the Holocaust. The event was attended by chargée d"affaires a.i. Tina Krce.
