On December 3 2008 in the Crystal Hall of Hotel Kvarner in Opatija Captain Mate Beretin was bestowed with “Vjesnik's Blue Ribbon”, the prestigious award for rescuing at sea. Croatian Ambassador to Japan Drago Stambuk proposed and recommended Capt. Beretin together with five Croatian officers and the rest of the crew of Japanese tanker Towada as candidates finding out about their admirable deed from Japanese press.

Croatian Ambassador to Japan Drago Stambuk proposed and recommended Capt. Beretin together with five Croatian officers and the rest of the crew of Japanese tanker Towada as candidates finding out about their admirable deed from Japanese press. In the night of February 17 2008, while sailing in South Chinese Sea, tanker Towada chartered by Japanese shipping company NYK (Nippon Yusen), under the command of Capt. Beretin and with 24 crew members on board, including five Croatian officers, in stormy weather and difficult night circumstances saved 26 crew members from sinking Chinese ship Jeinshan.
At the “Vjesnik's Blue Ribbon” award presentation ceremony the congratulatory letter from Ambassador Stambuk for Capt. Beretin and Towada's crew was read.
Japanese shipping company NYK, including Capt. Beretin, employs all together 220 Croatian seamen, mostly captains and first officers, with whose human and professional abilities is extremely satisfied.
