The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration on Monday, June 7, 2010 marked Croatian Diplomacy Day, with Minister Gordan Jandrokovic thanking ministry staff for their contribution to the implementation of Croatia's foreign policy. Looking back on Croatia's situation a year ago, Jandrokovic highlighted the progress in European Union accession negotiations, cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal, and Croatia's participation in peace operations. Speaking of Croatia's regional policy, he highlighted Croatia's bid to help Southeast European countries in the Euro-Atlantic integration processes by sharing its experience with them. Jandrokovic went on to say that economic diplomacy was a very important foreign policy element which should open doors to Croatian exporters and to investors willing to invest in Croatia.The minister also spoke of Croatia's achievements within multilateral organisations and of plans to modernise the Croatian diplomatic service. He announced that parliament would discuss a new foreign affairs bill in the early autumn.
Croatian Diplomacy Day is observed on June 7 to commemorate the oldest document in Croatia's diplomatic history, a letter Pope John VIII sent to Croatian Prince Branimir on 7 June 879, recognising his rule over Croatia.
