Heads of state and government from member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) gathered from July 15-16 for the 15th Summit with focus on political and economic developments and social issues.
Under the theme of "International Solidarity for Peace and Development," participants of the 15th NAM summit discussed international and regional issues, measures to deal with the economic crisis and put forward the action plan on coming activities of the movement in the next three years. With the participation of more than 118 countries and in the presence of over 50 heads of state, kings, and heads of governments, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Mubarak received NAM chairmanship from Cuban President Raul Castro for next three years. The Republic of Croatia participated at the NAM Summit as observer country.
Croatian President Stjepan Mesic hold a speech at the NAM Summit. He said that the Non-Aligned need to establish themselves as a new force, as allies of all those who wish to finally start to narrow the gap between the rich and poor, who aspire to social justice, who consider that no one has acquired the monopoly to rule over others on the basis of one's own power and strength, or the right to impose his model on others; it is only a matter of shouldering greater responsibility both for oneself, one's country and people, and for others too. He concluded his speech with a quote: "The Non-Aligned do not need to ask anyone to recognize their right to participate on equal terms in the resolution of world problems. They simply possess this right and should use it by being united, organized and active. This means that in the future too they have to shoulder their share of responsibility and obligations as one of the undoubtedly most influential factors in the struggle for further development of international relations, for strengthening of peace, security, independence and equality, for economic and social progress in the world."
