Croatian President H.E. Stjepan Mesic arrived in Jordan for a visit at the invitation of H.M. King Abdullah II. To attend an international conference of Nobel Prize winners, politicians and prominent public figures, focused on acute global problems. The issue of food is becoming increasingly acute and topical, and although hunger is not a new occurrence, what is new is the fact that hunger has started to appear in countries in which people did not formerly suffer from starvation, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said in an address at a conference on the hunger crisis in Petra. The food crisis is only a symptom, one of the symptoms of the general crisis of the global system, and the awareness of the true character and real causes underlying the crisis is not yet omnipresent, President Mesic stated in his address. If the problem was not dealt with systematically, the revolt of the starving and the migration of many people from the hunger-stricken parts of the world to those where food is still in adequate supply will become part of our everyday life, Croatian president emphasized. Triggers of the crisis include the higher prices of energy sources, the already unquestionable consequences of climate change, speculations in the money markets, growing food requirements in developing countries, and the transformation of food into fuel, the Croatian president pointed out. Croatian President Stjepan Mesic held talks with King Abdullah II in Petra on Wednesday. During their friendly and cordial talks, President Mesic thanked the Jordanian King for having invited him to participate in an international conference of Nobel Prize winners and prominent politicians in Petra. The Jordanian sovereign voiced satisfaction with progress in talks on establishing a direct flight service between his country and Croatia. King Abdullah II proposed that gifted Croatian secondary school pupils might be supported from the endowment he had established. King Abdullah II accepted President Mesic's invitation to visit Croatia this year
