Croatian Parliament President Luka Bebic said on Saturday that the debate at the meeting of parliament speakers from EU countries in Stockholm was of interest to Croatia because its parliament was now aligning Croatian legislation to that of the EU and was making necessary preparations to ensure the proper functioning of Croatia as soon as it joined the EU.
Bebic said Croatia had proposed holding theme sessions of parliament speakers that would deal with specific issues such as the environment, education or health.
The speaker of the Croatian parliament took the opportunity to hold several brief bilateral meetings with his EU counterparts, who he said expressed satisfaction with the progress Croatia had made on its path to EU membership.
During a meeting with Slovenian Parliament President Pavel Gantar, Bebic expressed hope that Slovenia would ratify the arbitration agreement on the settlement of the border dispute with Croatia as soon as possible.
This was the first meeting of parliament speakers since the Lisbon Treaty took effect on December 1. The treaty makes it possible for the first time for national parliaments to give their opinion when adopting EU laws, as EU leaders want to bring decision-making processes in Brussels as close to EU citizens as possible.
The meeting also focused on interparliamentary cooperation and the new powers of national parliaments in supervising EU law enforcement and judicial agencies Europol and Eurojust.
Attending the meeting were parliament speakers from the 27 EU member states and the membership candidates Croatia and Turkey.
Bebic was attending a day-long meeting of parliament speakers from EU member states and membership candidates on the new role of national parliaments in the passage of EU laws after the adoption of the Lisbon reform treaty.
