Croatian-Latvian political relations
Croatia recognized the independence of Latvia on August 28, 1991, and Latvia recognized the independence of Croatia on December 14, 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on February 14, 1992.
Relations between Croatia and Latvia are very good, and have a tendency for further development in all fields of bilateral co-operation: politics, defence, education, culture, economy (including tourism) etc.
As partner countries within NATO, Latvia and Croatia cooperate intensively in the A3-B3 format (countries of the US-Adriatic Charter and the US-Baltic Charter). Through political and expert consultations, Latvia shares with Croatia its experience from the EU accession process .
High-level bilateral contacts have been intensified significantly in recent years. Croatian high officials visiting Latvia included President Stjepan Mesic (2003), Prime Minister Sanader (2005), Speaker of the Parliament Luka Bebic (2008) and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Gordan Jandrokovic (2009). Latvian high officials visiting Croatia included President Vaire Vike-Freiberga (2004), Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis (2005 and 2007), Speaker of the Parliament Ingride Udre (2006), President Valdis Zatlers (2008) and Speaker of the Parliament Gundars Daudze (2010).
