The Embassy of the United States of America in Tirana and the Ministry of Justice of the United States, have organized a three-day Symposium on the Fight Against Corruption, which was held from 5-7 December 2016 in Tirana. The symposium was planned for judges, prosecutors, representatives of the relevant agencies, journalists and civil society. Speakers were the experts from the United States, among which were US Federal Prosecutor Mark Chutkow and FBI Agent Robert Beckman. The European experiences were presented by the Croatian Judge of USKOK Ms. Koraljka Bumci and Romanian representative of the State Attorney"s Office, Prosecutor Ms. Florentina Mirica.
At the opening of the Symposium, speeches were delivered by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania Mr. Edi Rama and US Ambassador Mr. Donald Lu, Ambassador of Croatia Ms. Sanja Bujas Juraga and Ambassador of Romania Mr. Mircea Perpelea. At the closing ceremony of the Symposium, President of the Republic of Albania Mr. Bujar Nishani said that the “ordinary” citizens are the ones who have daily experiences with corruption and its consequences and highlighted that efficient fight against corruption requires a real political will. Closing speech of Ambassador Lu referred to the necessity of implementation of the law for verification the judges and importance of accepting the recommendations of the Venice Commission. The message of all participants was that only decisive struggle against corruption enables democratic institutions to function effectively.
