Ambassador Sanja Bujas-Juraga has visited the City Council of Durres on 18 July and was received by Mayor Vangjush Dako. The Ambassador was accompanied by Mrs Ermina Lekaj Prljaska, recent Member of the Croatian Parliament, and Mr Gani Xharrahi, Chairman of the Council of the Albanian national minority in the County of Primorje and Gorski kotar.
The Ambassador and the Mayor agreed that it was necessary to translate the friendship between Croatia and Albania into concrete cooperation, and that the great potential for cooperation was in many fields still not explored.
The Ambassador sees great opportunities in Durres for initiating and intensifying cooperation due to the fact that it is a seaport on the Adriatic Sea directly connecting Croatia and Albania. Additional benefits are the closeness of Durres to the international airport Rinas in Tirana to which it is connected by road and railway.
Both consider it desirable and vital to establish cooperation between Durres and Rijeka or another Croatian port (Split, Zadar or šibenik) as soon as possible to facilitate thereby joint projects possibly financed by EU funds. It was also common agreement between them that it would be imperative to kick off cooperation by establishing a ferry line that would stimulate other forms of economic and tourist cooperation.
