On the initiative of the Croatian Chamber of Chartered Geodetic Engineers (HKOIG), Ruder Boškovic was selected as “European Surveyor of the Year 2016”. Therefore, the “5th European Day of Geodesy and Geoinformation” will be devoted to Ruder Boškovic and held in 37 member states of the Council of European Geodetic Surveyors (CLGE) under the auspices of the European Parliament, the President of the Republic of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, the Croatian Parliament and the Government of the Republic of Croatia. The event will be held to pay tribute to Ruder Boškovic’s life, his work and his contribution to geosciences.
After the first presentation held in Brussels, a presentation on Ruder Boškovic was also held during the CLGE General Assembly conference in Tirana 17 – 19 March, as well as a promotion of the book “Boškovic and Geosciences”.
Ambassador Sanja Bujas-Juraga took part in the presentation, underlining the fact that Ruder Boškovic was born in Dubrovnik and that he was one of the greatest and most versatile Croatian scientists and one of the greatest scholars in world history, whose thinking and work have proven to be well ahead of his time. His achievements in mathematics, physics, archaeology, geodesy, cartography, as well as philosophy, are still of value today and can be used in contemporary science, too. As the Ambassador noted, Ruder Boškovic’ extraordinary versatility is proven by the very fact that the Croatian-born scholar simultaneously contributed to the European intellectual scene as a priest, philosopher, poet and a diplomat. The Ambassador thanked everybody engaged in the promotion of Ruder Boškovic’s legacy.
