28th June: National Day and Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Croatia has been celebrated at the Europe House in London. Ambassador Grdešic highlighted the importance of 2016 being the year in which Croatia celebrates 25 years since the declaration of independence. The celebration of the National Day of Croatia marks the 25th June 1991 when the Croatian Parliament adopted its historical decision to start the process of separation from other former Yugoslav republics. This decision was preceded by a referendum held on 19th May 1991, where 94 percent of citizens decided Croatia was not to remain in Yugoslavia and gain independence. The National Day event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps accredited in the UK, business partners, media, nongovermental organisations as well as numerous Croatian citizens that live and work in the UK.
