Deputy Speaker of Croatian Parliament Mr. Željko Reiner in the capacity of the Croatian Parliament Speaker’s envoy attended the Centenary Commemoration of the First Public Sitting of Dáil Éireann. Speakers and Deputy Speakers of Lower Houses or unicameral parliaments of the EU 28 attended this special anniversary ceremony, whose central part was a joint sitting of the current Dáil and Seanad in the Round Room of the Mansion House in Dublin where the first Dáil met 100 years ago today.
During his visit to Ireland, Deputy Speaker Reiner also had bilateral political meetings to discuss bilateral cooperation and EU affairs.
He met with the Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann, Seán Ó Fearghail TD. The two officials highlighted the very good bilateral relations as well as the need to intensify trade and utilise the cooperation potential in tourism, culture, higher education and IT. They also exchanged views on current EU affairs, with emphasis on Brexit, and on the importance of parliamentary cooperation.
Deputy Speaker Reiner discussed the importance of parliamentary cooperation and the Future of Europe with Senator Denis O’Donovan, Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann. He also met with the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, and with the Minister for European Affairs Helen McEntee TD. Both talks focused on excellent relations and good bilateral cooperation.
