Statement

H.E. Ambassador Mirjana Mladineo
Permanent Representative of the Republic of Croatia to the United Nations
on Agenda Item 12: Pledging Event at the First Regular Session 2006 of the UNICEF Executive Board
United Nations, New York, 18 January 2006
Mr. President,
Croatia has a long and productive association with UNICEF. Starting a decade ago, from our painful experience of war and a lengthy transition process to date, Croatia, then a beneficiary of UNICEF's help, today has become a stabilized country and a full-pledged democracy, able to cope with and solve a number of problems within its own resources. As such, Croatia is ready now more than ever, to reach out and extend a more significant share in the global efforts to help the world's children. We strongly support UNICEF's commitment to survival, protection and development of the world's children. We applaud UNICEF's efforts to date to achieve progress in immunizations, polio eradication, malaria control, child and maternal mortality, and basic education, as well as its utmost efforts to alleviate the suffering of children in the many emergencies, starting from Asian tsunami, to Hurricane Katrina and many other crises, including the daily emergencies posed by HIV/AIDS.
UNICEF remains a high-priority development partner for Croatia, both at a multilateral level, and in working together to help resolve the development challenges faced by our bilateral partner countries.
Mr. President,
The developmental activities of the UN system carry the message of the United Nations into the real world and impact on the lives of millions. The work done by UNICEF helps in meeting the basic needs of children and in expanding their oportunities so that they can reach their full potential.
We are therefore proud to announce our pledge of 20.000 USD to the regular resources of UNICEF in 2006.
Thank you.
