Croatia supports UN reform efforts Croatian Deputy Permanent Representative and Charge d’Affaires Ivan Nimac delivered a statement to the UN General Assembly today on the occasion of the follow-up to the outcome of the Millenium Summit report of the Secretary-General and pledged Croatia’s support in efforts to reform the UN. In particular, Croatia was pleased with the proposal of the Secretary-General that there be a recommitment to UN development goals and also expressed its support for a Peace Building Commission. Croatia indicated that it would engage constructively in the dialogue to come on strengthening the normative basis for international peace and security. Croatia also welcomed the proposal of the Secretary-General to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights. Regarding reform of the Security Council, Croatia reiterated its support for an expansion in the number of permanent and non-permanent seats. However, Croatia expressed its concern that the proposals in the Secretary-General’s report do not foresee the existence of the Eastern European Group. Croatia believes that the Eastern European Group, given the growth in its membership in the last 15 years, has a legitimate claim to an additional non-permanent seat on the Council.
