The Government of the Republic of Croatia and the Government of Canada have successfully completed the negotiations on the bilateral Air Traffic Agreement on December 1, 2006. Mr. Pero Bilas, Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Sea, Tourism, Transportation and Development, headed the delegation for Croatia, which also consisted of members from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Ministry of Economy, Labour and Entrepreneurship, as well as representatives of Croatia Air Lines, Air Adriatic and Zagreb Airport as observers. Mr. Nadir Patel who represents the Canadian Department of Foreign Affaires and International Trade headed Canada's delegation for the negotiations of the Air Traffic Agreement. Members of the Canadian delegation also included observers from the Canadian air carriers, Air Canada and Sky Air. The resolution to contract the Agreement was motioned by the Government of the Republic of Croatia at the November 16, 2006 session of Parliament. The execution of the Decision was given to the competence of the Ministry of Sea, Tourism, Transportation and Development. The Decision preceded the Canadian initiative to contract the Agreement; in fact, there is still no established regular direct air route between the two countries. Croatia proposed such an Agreement to Canada in the beginning of 1995. In the past few years the situation on global air traffic has dramatically changed and this change has influenced the Canadian side. The Air Traffic Agreement opens the possibility of establishing direct air line routes between the participating countries. This will enable stronger ties between Croatia and numerous Croatian communities in Canada, as well as ascertain mutual economic, cultural and other new beneficial collaboration with this large country. The initialed Air Traffic Agreement with Canada anticipates changes to the provisions prior to the official Agreement coming into effect.
