Proclamation of May 30 as Croatian Heritage Day in Alberta
This symbolic decision, which is source of pride for all Canadians of Croatian origin, was proclaimed on May 15, 2025 by the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Status of Women of Alberta, the Honourable Tanya Fir, in accordance with the Special Days Act of Alberta, at the initiative of the Croatian Community Leadership Committee in Calgary and the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Canada, with the support of all main Croatian associations in Alberta. Alberta thus joins the Province of Ontario, which officially declared May 30 as Croatian Heritage Day last year.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Canada, Mr. Vice Skračić, joined the celebratory event at the Croatian Cultural Centre in Calgary on May 31st, which brought together the wider community to mark this exceptional day that represents a symbol of unity, national pride and Croatian identity in Canada.
Congratulating on the proclamation of Croatian Heritage Day, as well as the Statehood Day of the Republic of Croatia, Ambassador Skračić also had the honour to share the congratulatory message addressed to the community by the Minister of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, dr.sc. Nina Obuljen Koržinek, emphasizing the pride that Croatian values, culture, traditions and the spirit of togetherness which live on in generations of Canadian Croatians, have left an indelible mark on the history, society and culture of Alberta.
The celebration of Croatian Heritage Day was also an opportunity to highlight the enduring ties that unite Croatian communities across Canada with the Republic of Croatia, preserving and strengthening Croatian identity and unity, in which the Government of the Republic of Croatia remains an important partner through its programs dedicated to supporting the Croatian diaspora and promoting Croatian culture abroad.
