Croatian tennis players Marin Čilić, Ivan Ljubičić and Ivo Karlović had a small but strong fan support among the staff of the Croatian Embassy and a small group of Croatians working in Beijing during the tennis tournament China Open 2009. The best placement was attained by Marin Čilić. By defeating Nikolaj Davidenko, the eighth seeded player in the world and the first tournament winner and the second seeded Rafael Nadal, he reached the finals. Following this tournament Marin Čilić ranked 13 on the ATP list.
