Ambassador Mihelin participated in the 12th Forum on China and Globalization organized by the Beijing think-tank Center for China and Globalization (CCG)
In his remarks, Ambassador Mihelin emphasised that Europe, despite slower economic growth compared to other fast-growing regions such as the Indo-Pacific, remains a strong and developed continent with significant structural advantages, which make it well positioned for long-term competitiveness, sustainable growth and economic resilience, and which is why it continues to attract talent, capital and investment from all over the world.
Ambassador Mihelin further noted, however, that Europe must redefine its place in a world marked by growing uncertainty, strategic competition and weakening global norms. He stressed the need for greater European proactiveness, better coordination and adaptation to new geopolitical realities through the development of strategic autonomy and the strengthening of economic security, warning that in a world where threats are evolving at an ever-faster pace, it is no longer sufficient merely to react, but rather necessary to become more proactive. Ambassador pointed out that the path forward requires the EU to reduce critical dependencies through supply chain diversification, to use trade policy strategically to build resilient networks, to invest in technological sovereignty, to invest more in research and development, to strengthen its internal market, and to ensure coherence between policies - many policy elements China itself has already achieved.
